Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill., called for the appointment of an independent panel or a special prosecutor to probe Russia's meddling the in the 2016 presidential election.
"I think it's time that we look at the idea of whether it's an independent commission or special prosecutor," Kinzinger told CNN's "New Day" on Wednesday.
"I think it's time that we do whatever is necessary that when this is over we give the American people the confidence that justice, either way — either way it goes, has been served."
And he claimed politic views are now playing a role in how lawmakers' look at Russian interference in the election.
"I think we're getting to a point where this is too political," he said. "People are making determinations on whether something did or didn't happen by their political stripes, not by the rule of law. And so I think we're at the position now where it's time for an independent commission or a special prosecutor or whatever."
His comments came after The New York Times reported President Donald Trump asked then FBI Director James Comey to shut down an investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn, according to a memo Comey wrote.
"If, in fact, what was in the memo was true, it's very concerning," Kinzinger told CNN.
"We need to get to the bottom of that (and) have our legal experts find out what level does that rise to. The American people deserve the answers here . . . whether you're a Republican, Democrat or independent."
