President Joe Biden's nomination of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to fill the Supreme Court seat being vacated by retiring Justice Stephen Breyer was a surprise to many court observers who were stunned that the pick made no attempt to appeal to moderates.

Biden initially raised eyebrows during his presidential campaign when he announced that he would only consider a Black female as the new justice, which automatically eliminated 90% of the field.
