Columnist Rubin: ACA Troubles Will Produce 2014's 'Soccer Moms'

By    |   Monday, 11 November 2013 08:11 PM EST

The millions of people whose private insurance was dropped because it didn't meet the standards of the Affordable Care Act will be the "soccer moms" of the 2014 midterm elections, Washington Post columnist Jennifer Rubin said Monday.

"The 'soccer moms' became sort of the 'gotta get' segment of the electorate, the key swing voters; Republicans had to appeal to them," "Right Turn" columnist Rubin told The Steve Malzberg Show on Newsmax TV.

"The individually insured who were screwed by Obamacare are going to be the soccer moms of 2014," she said. "These people are generally conservative, they're middle-class, they liked their insurance before, and they're very cost-conscious."

"So, if you torment these people . . . you're going to get them all excited, and if they had some qualms about the Republican Party, this should overcome it," she said Monday. "Republicans need to do this very carefully and very thoughtfully, and that is appeal to helping those people."

But Obamacare is not the only fiasco of the Obama administration, she said.

"Whatever this administration says cannot be believed," she said. "You don't negotiate with a crazed Islamic regime . . . And . . . what right does the government got to give up our insurance? So, there's a lot of similarities and there's a similar reaction to both, namely, that there's really bipartisan outrage"

Rubin said the GOP has to take advantage of Democrats' "queasiness" over the failing [of] Obamacare.

"You have people like Mary Landrieu [who] introduced a bill to let people keep their insurance," she said, giving just such an example of Democratic queasiness. "If that's the case, the entire exchange system goes overboard because that's all that's keeping those things going."
