Rep. Blackburn to President: Don't Fix Obamacare, Repair Damage

Thursday, 14 November 2013 04:44 PM EST

Rep. Marsha Blackburn is urging President Barack Obama to stop tweaking the Affordable Care Act and join with Republicans to repair the damage she believes the law has done to Americans.

"The president seems to think that he can go wave a magic wand and he can fix things by doing that," the Tennessee Republican told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"We are a nation of laws, we abide by the rule of law, and he needs to be working with us, not against us, on trying to get this straightened out."

On Thursday, Obama announced changes to his healthcare law that would give insurance companies the option to keep offering consumers plans that would otherwise be canceled.

The administrative changes are good for just one year, though senior administration officials said they could be extended if problems with the law persist.

It's one of many changes the commander-in-chief has made on his own, without seeking the approval of Congress.

Blackburn, who is the vice chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, says the president cannot continue to change the law as he sees fit and must be stopped from doing so if he continues.

"My hope is that we're going to have more members of Congress who will agree with us that he cannot do this," she said.

"Congress is who has to pass the laws; they've got to implement it all or implement none of it. That's one of the reasons I had my bill, HR 2809, and still have it, which is the one-year delay of all things Obamacare . . .

"You cannot start picking and choosing that you're going to implement or enforce one part of the law or another part of the law."

Blackburn said Republican lawmakers also have a number of healthcare plan alternatives ready to go.

"We've got lots of options on the table … [Senate Majority Leader] Harry Reid needs to start picking up some of these bills and working with us to solve the problems and to find solutions to the issues that are affecting the American people," she said.

"We need to be talking about our solutions and what we have done and will continue to do. I'm in total agreement with you."

Blackburn has been one of the most vocal GOP voices in opposing the Affordable Care Act and remains incredulous over the botched rollout of the HealthCare.gov website.

"The incompetence in building this website is staggering," she said last week.
