Rep. Moran to Newsmax: Clean GOP Bill Would Address 'Only Border Security'

By    |   Monday, 06 February 2023 07:08 PM EST

Rep. Nathaniel Moran, R-Texas, earnestly believes Republicans and Democrats will soon rally behind his "Border Security Investment Act" — a clean bill that comes with just one tangible purpose.

The bill would raise "money that would go to border security, and only border security," Moran told Newsmax Monday evening, while appearing on "Spicer & Co." with hosts Sean Spicer and Lyndsay Keith.

In a nutshell, the Border Security Investment Act would become a dedicated source for funding border initiatives.

It would impose a 37% user-transaction fee on remittance transfers, via money service businesses, where the remittance originates in the United States, and gets sent to "one of the top five nations of origin for illegal immigration" at the U.S.-Mexico border.

After that, Moran says the collected monies would go into one of two trust funds: Direct border security measures with the federal government, or the pot for reimbursing states enforcing its own border security measures.

"It's a simple bill proposal. It makes sense, and it's needed," said Moran, a member of both the House Judiciary and House Foreign Affairs committees.

According to Moran's office, the Border Security Investment Act bill would also restore fiscal responsibility by "directing unexpended funds held in trust in excess of $50 billion."

The chaos at the southern border has been apparent since President Joe Biden took over the White House 24-plus months ago. And during last year's "State of the Union" address, the president claimed he was ready to work with Republicans on confronting the nation's opioid crisis and bolstering border security.

But these pledges never materialized, lamented Moran.

"This is not a Democrat vs. Republican issue. It's an American citizen issue," said Moran. And "unfortunately, the talk the president gives us, does not match his walk. He talks about unity. He talks about working across the aisle."

As a counter, though, Moran pointed to how Biden still refuses to negotiate terms with Republicans for avoiding the looming debt-limit crisis.

Moran also expressed disappointment with Democratic Party leaders in border states, such as Texas, being similarly flippant about taking responsibility for border issues.

"The trickle-down effect of Biden's statements are working their way down to the local level," said Moran. "I've been to the El Paso sector" of unlawful border ports, "and I've seen firsthand that's simply not the case.

"Denial and putting our heads in the sand is not a solution to the border crisis," added Moran.
