NJ Teen in Pledge Case: 'Under God' Protects Rights of Everyone

By    |   Monday, 09 February 2015 11:26 AM

A New Jersey teen who prevailed in her lawsuit to have the phrase "one nation under God" remain in the Pledge of Allegiance said Monday on Newsmax TV's "America's Forum" that she didn't consider her case to be about religion.

"I don't think this is so much about religion as much as it is about protecting our freedom and liberty as American citizens," Samantha Jones said. "Religion could play a part of it, but I'm fighting this for our rights as American citizens."

Jones and her family fought back after atheist group the American Humanist Association filed a lawsuit against the Matawan-Aberdeen Regional School District on behalf of an unidentified couple and their child. The lawsuit claimed that reciting the pledge violated Article 1 of the state constitution and sought to prevent public school students from reciting the pledge in its entirety, according to Fox News.

But a judge dismissed the atheist group's suit.

"I think the judges sided with me because America is such a diverse country with so many different people with different beliefs who call this country home," Jones said.

"'Under God' does protect the rights of everyone, including atheists, because it acknowledges that our rights don't come from the government, but from a higher power."
