Because President Joe Biden has displayed such weakness in his dealings with Iran, it is unknown whether the military strikes the U.S. took against proxies of the Islamic Republic in Iraq and Syria on Friday will have any effect, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis told Newsmax.
"The fundamental issue is that deterrence has failed because Biden has been weak," DeSantis told "Eric Bolling The Balance." "The way you keep the peace against hostile actors like these Iranian militias is that they will be worried if they were to move on you of what the consequences will be.
"But up until now, they've been able to take a lot of potshots at U.S. forces, of course — even killing three recently. And they haven't seen very much in the way of a robust response."
The U.S. action in Iraq and Syria came on the same day remains of the three U.S. soldiers killed in a drone strike Sunday in Jordan by Iranian-backed terrorists were returned to the United States. Biden said in a news release Friday's strikes might not be the only action taken against Iran and its proxies and "it will continue at times and places of our choosing."
"We'll see whether this is something that is real," DeSantis said. "I know that they basically telegraphed what they were going to do, which you normally wouldn't think would be a good idea. If it's just lobbing some missiles at some empty aspirin factory [like Bill Clinton ordered in Iraq in 1998], that's not going to be deterrence. If it's something that actually packs a punch and the Iranians stop attacking our troops, then you'll know that it's been successful.
"With Biden, what we've seen is he's always a day late and a dollar short. And he's usually erring on the side of weakness and inviting more conflict from our adversaries."
