President Donald Trump's performance at the G-20 summit in Germany was a mixed bag, Jed Babbin, the deputy undersecretary of defense for President George H.W. Bush, told Newsmax TV on Monday.
"I'd give him a B: Basically, he did a lot of things right," Babbin told "Newsmax Now" host Bill Tucker.
There was the good, according to Babbin:
"Sticking up for the resistance to the climate change nonsense. Telling them that he's not going to go along with every bit of free trade like it's always been in the past. Don't forget the G-20, they want unanimity. They expect American leadership, but only and so far as it goes their way. They don't want to be led away from their set notions, and Mr. Trump is trying to do that."

And there was the bad:
"Trying to agree with [Russian President] Vladimir Putin on some sort of cyber protection unit is just bizarre . . . [and] it was really not right for him to put [his daughter] Ivanka in his chair at one point, because that's [Secretary of State] Rex Tillerson's job. He was right there, and it's a big slap that I don't think Tillerson deserves."
Babbin also believes Trump's grilling of Putin on Russia's apparent meddling in the 2016 president election basically went nowhere.
"He needed to put Putin back a little bit, to kind of back foot him," Babbin told Tucker. "And he did – but apparently for 10 seconds or less.
"And then he said 'oh okay, let's put that behind us, and let's cooperate on cyberwar affair.' I mean are you kidding? Like they say on 'Monday Night Football': 'C'mon man.' This is not right. There's something very badly wrong with that approach."
Babbin, a senior fellow at the London Center for Policy Research, is the author of "The BDS War Against Israel: The Orwellian Campaign to Destroy Israel Through the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions Movement," written with Herbert London.
