Ex-NYPD Cop Sapraicone to Newsmax: Santos Exposed Vetting Flaws

By    |   Monday, 04 December 2023 03:07 PM EST

Former Rep. George Santos' brief time in the U.S. House of Representatives showed that Long Island Republicans must vet their candidates better, former New York Police Department Det. Michael Sapraicone told Newsmax on Monday.

The House voted on Friday to expel Santos, who had won his seat in the midterms, after a critical ethics report on his conduct that accused him of converting campaign donations for his own use.

Sapraicone, now a businessman running for Santos' seat, said integrity will be an issue in the race for the seat in New York's 3rd Congressional District.

"I think it's so important that we vet people and we didn't do that successfully with Santos," Sapraicone said on "American Agenda." "I think one good thing about Santos is he's proven that we need to now vet our candidates better. We need to vet our candidates and understand them and know what they stand for.”

After retiring from the NYPD in 2000, Sapraicone built Squad Security into a global security firm.

"I believe integrity is important, your ethics are important, and the morality to have and how you deal with people and how you talk to people. Those are important things," he said. "I would hope no one has to question my integrity. It speaks for itself. It speaks for what we're doing in government."

Sapraicone, a native of Queens, New York, now resides in Oyster Bay, New York. He's the father of five.

"I think we've been doing a good job so far. We've been out there, meeting the constituents, sitting down and talking to people," he said of his campaign. "What we're doing is we're listening to people, and that's something that lacks a lot of times with politicians. They're thinking of their own agenda and moving forward.”

Sapraicone said he agreed with lawmakers who voted to expel Santos.

"I agree with them. It's the right choice," he said. "I wish it would have happened sooner, but it's about time we step up. And I think it was actually a bipartisan situation where everybody got together and they realized we need to change the way things are happening. We need to remove him. He's been nothing but a stain on us since he was elected last November."
