Former President Donald Trump has "big advantages" on the issues voters care most about, and that's why he's ahead of President Joe Biden in most of the national polls, pollster Jim McLaughlin said on Newsmax Sunday.
"When you look at the issues that voters care about, most of these issues like the economy, inflation, crime, and immigration, and Joe Biden's negatives, his disapproval rating is well over 60%," McLaughlin said on Newsmax's "Wake Up America." "And then when you compare him versus President Trump, President Trump is significantly ahead of him."
Former Rep. Bob Barr, R-Ga., also on the program, commented that even while Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis told Newsmax Saturday that his campaign isn't chasing the national polls, he doesn't see DeSantis or any of the others in the field for the GOP presidential nomination catching up with Trump.
"I commend Gov. DeSantis for trying to make the best of a bad polling situation," Barr said. "He has to do that. Every candidate and second or lower place has to do that. But I just don't see any other Republican candidates being able to make up that huge difference. Their numbers are in the twenties at best, and Trump's are in the sixties."
However, he said he is troubled that both Trump and Biden have high unfavorable numbers and he suspects that bothers many voters.
"But if those are the choices we have, those are the choices we have," said Barr.
McLaughlin, though, pointed out that Trump has a "significant polling advantage" over Biden, and his job approval remains higher.
"What people care about is they want somebody that can do the job," McLaughlin said. "This is going to be a binary choice at the end of the day."
The Democrats are reportedly looking at swapping Biden out, he added, "But if you look at somebody like Gavin Newsom, [they're] going have to deal with a record that either is just as bad as Joe Biden, or it might be even worse."
