Matthew Whitaker to Newsmax: Lot of Ways Trump Can Beat Charges

By    |   Friday, 31 March 2023 10:39 AM EDT

Matthew Whitaker, former acting attorney general, called the indictment of former President Donald Trump "a real erosion of the rule of law" that should concern all Americans.

"We should all be concerned where we are today," Whitaker told Newsmax's "Wake Up America" on Friday.

"Based upon everything we know so far, I expect a flurry of motions to dismiss, to disqualify, to move the trial outside of Manhattan.

"And obviously I think there's going to be a little bit of a circus environment in the near term in anticipation of the president coming back to New York and going through the process next week."

Whitaker questioned the fairness of jury, which is unlikely to be impartial in Manhattan.

"This is an increasing problem across our country, especially in places like Washington, D.C., Manhattan, and a few other of our big cities where there is a large block of ideologically left-leaning jury pools," Whitaker said. "The short answer is I don't know. I hope that the jurors would be fair and impartial.

"But I think it's a real question. And I think there's going to be a series of soul-searching among ordinary Americans of good faith as to whether or not our justice system is truly fair or whether we have crossed the Rubicon in order to try to 'get Trump.' I think the rest of us should be concerned that this is no longer a fair system of impartial justice.

Getting over the legal hurdle of expired statute of limitations, Whitaker called it "a huge leap."

"There are going to be other courts who weigh in on this above the DA's office to determine whether this legal period is even correct," he concluded. "I don't think it's consistent with the way the law currently stands.

"I think there are going to be a lot of ways for the president to beat many of these charges."
