The Hamas terrorists' attack on Israel early Saturday is "absolutely related to the Biden administration's appeasement of Iran," Rep. Harriet Hageman tells Newsmax.
"I just have to say my heart goes out to those folks. And I think what this demonstrates is that with a weak America, you have a very dangerous world," the Wyoming Republican said on Newsmax's "America Right Now."
At least 40 people were killed and hundreds were wounded after Palestinian Islamist group Hamas launched the biggest attack on Israel in years. The assault included gunmen crossing into Israel and a barrage of rockets fired into the country from Gaza.
"This is something that I think that we have all been careful of in relation to empowering Iran, giving Iran billions of dollars," Hageman said. "We have [been] turning a blind eye to their effort to get nuclear weapons [and] empowered bring them to continue to spread terror throughout the Middle East."
The attack on Israel is "something that I think was a matter of when, not if," said Hageman. "I think again it is in large part because of the failed policies of the Biden administration and the effort in appeasement to terrorists."
The focus on Ukraine, she added, is "weakening us and weakening us militarily elsewhere."
The congresswoman also Saturday discussed the fight in the House to replace ousted Rep. Kevin McCarthy as speaker, saying that she supports Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, in his bid to take the gavel.
However, Hageman said she voted to keep McCarthy, and she thinks he was a good speaker.
"Kevin McCarthy carried out the promises that he made in January," she said. "We have gone back to regular order. We've been able to make amendments from the floor. It has been a much more open and engaging process for everyone who is in Congress, and I do believe that he did exactly what he said he was going to do when he was handed the gavel in January."
But now that he's out, the House must look forward. And while there are three "excellent candidates," for speaker — Jordan; Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La.; and potentially Rep. Kevin Hern, R-Okla. — Hageman said her choice is Jordan because she aligns with him politically.
"I've worked with him on the Judiciary Committee and the Select Committee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government," she said. "I'm very aligned with him in terms of his conservative policies. I agree with him, for example, on Ukraine ... I agree with him in terms of returning power to the states. So philosophically, Jim Jordan and I are aligned."
Hageman added that she thinks former President Donald Trump's endorsement will help Jordan, but also she believes that "with the three good candidates that we have, I'm hopeful that we'll be able to walk out of the room next week with a speaker ... and we'll get back to work doing our appropriations bills."
