Former President Donald Trump unexpectedly joined a press gathering involving Newsmax and other outlets at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach after he finished a round of golf.
He immediately said he shot a 71 on the course and noted it shows his "cognitive function" is still strong — a jab at President Joe Biden.
Trump noted that the enthusiasm was "incredible" in New Hampshire and Nevada this weekend.
His overriding point was to ask reporters if they knew the "prevent defense" in the NFL, which rarely works when football teams sit on a big lead. He said he will not operate that way, but will keep pressing hard to finish out GOP nomination battle strong.
"Still have to run it out," he said.
Asked by Newsmax about the latest polling, showing Nikki Haley's support may be growing and prompting "Nikki surge" stories, Trump quickly jabbed "she's at 9" percentage points in one recent poll.
Trump responded "fake poll" when questioned about a CBS poll in New Hampshire released Sunday showing Haley just 15 points behind him — 29% for Haley vs. 44% for Trump.
He also ticked of all of his big issues that are resonating in the campaign:
- "We want strong borders. ... We're like a joke throughout the entire world.
- "Biden has been the worst ally to Israel anyone has ever had." Iran was "broke. They had no money for Hamas, no money for Hezbollah."
- "The worst president ever — ever — for Israel was Biden. He allowed Iran to get rich" with the sanctions relief.
- "Hamas was out of business. They were literally out of business."
- On Biden's cognitive function or lack thereof: "Honestly I don't think he knows what the hell is going on."
- On Rudy Giuliani's court case, he said, "I think it's so sad what's happened to Rudy," calling him a "great patriot."
He added that Viktor Orbán of Hungary has said China and Russia were scared of Trump. "It's a message of strength," he said of his approach to foreign policy.
"The other thing I want people to think about is unity," he said, adding he knows it may sound of strange because of his tough stances.
"The country was coming together — it was coming together through success" he said of his time in office, adding Biden has destroyed that effort to come together.
