The challenge for the Republican Party in choosing a new House speaker is unity, not policy, and in focusing on the greater good, Rep. Dan Meuser told Newsmax on Monday.
The Pennsylvania congressman, who is 1 of 9 Republican candidates vying for the job of speaker after Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan dropped out of the race on Friday, told Newsmax's "Newsline" that he entered the contest, because "I saw us not coming together, not unifying."
The Republican conference is set to meet behind closed doors on Monday evening in order to reduce the field to two candidates.
Meuser said, "I believe I always focus on the greater good," and said it was very discouraging to witness "the dysfunction that we were showing to the country, my constituents' frustration of removing Kevin McCarthy, who did an excellent job as speaker, and the processes that ensued with Jim Jordan."
Meuser emphasized that "my background has been growing a small business into a large business, bringing people together ... and we need it to be done not just in words but in actions, in procedures and in new plans that need to be executed every single day so every single member ... feels ownership, feels authorship, feels responsibility for the policy, and the plans we work on together."
The Pennsylvania congressman stressed that "if we can do that, we can be very strong, and we can defeat much of what the Biden catastrophe continues to put forth and get more legislation passed."
Meuser added that, as a sign of unity and placing the greater good as a top priority, "I signed a pledge that whoever of the nine that receives 50% plus one, I will back and vote for on the House floor."
He did point out, however, that "what we do need is a leader, or primarily a speaker, that puts members first, who puts people first," adding that by taking this approach this "is how we are going to win" in next year's congressional and presidential election.
