It's not the job of U.S. senators to vote based on their constituents; the job of senators is to vote their conscience, longtime TV host and best-selling author Bill O'Reilly told Newsmax on Tuesday.
When asked on "Finnerty" what a senator's job is regarding the confirmation of presidential nominations, O'Reilly objected to the idea that senators should heed pressure from their constituents.
"The senator's job is to vote his or her conscience, and the job of the voter is to say, 'Well, I either respect the vote or I don't, and I'm going to vote against her the next time around.'"
"Because you have to understand," O'Reilly continued, "that every American [doesn't] have the information flow the senators have. They don't, and a lot of emotion is involved with this. There are people that say, 'OK, [President-elect] Donald Trump got a mandate to run it. And everything that President Trump puts forth should be confirmed, should be affirmed.'"
"I don't see it that way. I think that very strong people and very smart people have to sit down, like the founding fathers."
