NASA's First All-Female Spacewalk Set for March 29

The first all-female spacewalk will take place later this month, NASA has announced.

The International Space Station spacewalk March 29 will include astronauts Anne McClain and Christina Koch, as well as Jackie Kagey as the lead spacewalk flight controller, the HuffPost reported Wednesday. 

The spacewalk will last around seven hours, NASA's website shows.

“The March 29 spacewalk will be the first with only women,” NASA spokeswoman Kathryn Hambleton told the news outlet, adding, however, “assignments and schedules could always change.” 

“It was not orchestrated to be this way; these spacewalks were originally scheduled to take place in the fall,” Hambleton said, the HuffPost reported.

McClain and Koch will be aided on the ground by flight directors Mary Lawrence and Kristen Facciol in Houston, NBC News reported.

Cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman to make it to space in 1963. Sally Ride was the first American woman in space in 1983.
