Sen. Wicker: I Fear for my Son's Safety in Wake of Benghazi

By    |   Wednesday, 08 May 2013 04:27 PM EDT

Mississippi Sen. Roger Wicker says the deadly attack on the U.S. Embassy in Benghazi reveals such lax security measures by the U.S. government that he fears for the safety of his military-officer son.

"Our men and women everywhere, our diplomats . . . in harm's way, need some sort of assurance that we've learned our lessons and, going forward, this is not likely to happen again,'' Wicker told "The Steve Malzberg Show'' on Newsmax TV.

Story continues below.

"I don't know that we can make that assurance. I have a son in the military right now.

"Frankly, I'm not comfortable with him signing on for a career with the current leadership that I see and the current shortages and problems that our men and women in the military are having to face.''

Wicker's son McDaniel was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Air Force in 2011.

The junior senator from the Magnolia State — an Air Force veteran himself — said he is not sure how the Congressional probe into the Obama Administration's alleged cover-up of the Benghazi aftermath will shake out.

But, he predicted, "it may be that the information is about to come forward and come forward with a vengeance.''

He noted Sen. Lindsey Graham's prediction that as the investigation continues, "the dam is about to break and you are going to find a system failure before, during and after . . . political manipulation seven weeks before an election . . . people asleep at the switch when it comes to the State Department, including Hillary Clinton.''

Wicker, who is a member of the Armed Services Committee, told Steve Malzberg: "It may be that Sen. Graham is right.''
