Wheeler: Obama's Czars Make up 'Shadow Government'

By    |   Sunday, 11 October 2009 07:25 PM EDT

President Barack Obama has appointed nearly three dozen “czars” to oversee policy in his administration. Although these federal officials wield enormous power, most have not been confirmed by the Senate, nor are details of their pay and scope of influence known in most cases.

Scott Wheeler, the executive director of the National Republican Trust PAC, has pulled back the veil of secrecy on these high-ranking officials with a new book, “Shadow Government: What Obama Doesn't Want You to Know About His Czars.”

Controversy over the 35 czars continues to build, Wheeler told Newsmax.TV's Ashley Martella, pointing out the disturbing viewpoints held by Mark Lloyd, the diversity czar at the Federal Communications Commission.

“They define diversity as people who look different and think precisely the same way, which is a little bit anethematical to diversity,” Wheeler said. “Mr. Lloyd has a very interesting background and has been unashamed to brag about some of his beliefs.

“He praised Hugo Chavez, the Venezuelan dictator. In fact, he did so on camera, perhaps not realizing he was being taped at the moment. But it was explaining and sort of telegraphing his agenda for how you control media in the United States. And what he said was, after Chavez's first attempt at a revolution he didn't get the fact that you have to take over media properties, and so he was thrown in prison. After he got out of prison and launched his second revolution, he took over the media, and then, in Mark Lloyd's words, had a very good revolution and in fact remains in power today.

“Lloyd had telegraphed that he thinks the way you get control of the media. . . is you create very onerous taxes on private-owned media. . . And when media companies, communications companies go out of business because of the onerous, heavy tax, you take those stations and award them to people that they define as minority interest groups.”

Wheeler is even tougher on Todd Stern, Obama's climate-change czar, referring to him as a “panic-stricken global warming fanatic.”

“Stern is a true believer, at least he says he is, in that the sky is falling,” said Wheeler. “And no amount of scientific evidence, which has changed considerably in the past 10 years since he started hollering that the sky is falling, has changed his opinion at all. In fact, he seems to suggest that it's far more dire at this point now than it ever has been, despite the trend in scientific evidence that shows we're in a cooling period.”

Wheeler also takes direct aim at energy czar Carol Browner.

“She's stated that in the past that she was a very radical EPA director under [President Bill] Clinton. She also advised her staff not to send e-mails because they can't be destroyed. And, incidentally, her relationship with the Socialist International has been scrubbed from the Internet. Fortunately we got hold of that information before it was scrubbed from the Internet. But no one has raised the question with her: Why was she a member of this group that believes in an internationalist, socialist society? That seems to beg someone's interest in the media, other than us, to ask those questions. Especially considering the very dangerous and onerous authority that people in charge of energy and climate issues have these days with cap-and-trade legislation in the Congress. They will be responsible for enforcing whatever comes out of the House and the Senate. … And here's a person who really thinks that they can control social behavior through energy policy. It's a very dangerous precedent for the nation.”

Other issues addressed during the interview:

  • On proposed cap-and-trade legislation: “It will be an industry stopper.”

  • On Kevin Jennings, the safe schools czar: “When you look at Kevin Jennings it makes people wonder, 'What was the president thinking?'. . . Here's a guy who wrote [a] book called 'Queering Elementary Education.'”

  • On Alan Bersin, the border czar: “He has shown clear evidence that he doesn't believe in borders, he doesn't believe in national borders. And so 'border security czar' is almost an oxymoron.”
