Dems Hoping Weiner's Wife Can Get Him to Quit

By    |   Wednesday, 15 June 2011 03:32 PM EDT

Democrats are hoping one last weapon in their arsenal can persuade U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner to resign — his wife.

Huma Abedin, the embattled Congressman's wife, has returned home from abroad as her husband faced more calls for his resignation over a sexting scandal.

Abedin, is a top aide to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and has been on a trip to the Middle East and Africa since June 8. She is also pregnant with the couple's first child, CNN reports.

Weiner's friends have said he wanted to see her in person and talk to her before making a decision on his career.

Weiner, denied for weeks, but finally admitted to, sending lewd online messages and photos to women over the past three years, including a 17-year-old. Some of those photos were sent from the House of Representatives' gym.

He has asked for a brief leave of absence to seek treatment. Top Congressional leaders have asked him to resign, including Nancy Pelosi, John Boehner and most recently, the president who admitted if he were in Weiner's shoes, he'd resign.
