Washington Post Editorial Page Editor Fred Hiatt expressed frustration about the probe into the disappearance and alleged murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi and said he believes Saudi Arabia already knows what happened to him.
Hiatt made his comments during a Friday interview on Fox News’ “America’s Newsroom.” Khashoggi had been a columnist for the newspaper.
“I think there have been mixed signals from the president and others,” Hiatt said. “I think it is good they’re saying they want to get to the bottom of it. Our feeling has been on the second day, I think, we wrote an editorial and said this isn’t the normal mystery. It’s a mystery that could be solved in 30-seconds.
“Jamal walked into the Saudi consulate, this is what we know, and he didn’t walk out. And so, I think the Saudi government knows what happened to him and I don’t know why we need days and days of investigation. I think they should just tell us what happened.
“Certainly, what’s been coming out of Turkish intelligence is disturbing. We need an investigation. If the three governments aren’t going to do it, let's have the U.N. (do it.) But let’s get the facts out.”
The Turkish pro-government newspaper Yeni Safak, citing what it described as an audio recording of Khashoggi's slaying, said a Saudi team confronted the journalist after he walked into the Saudi consulate, cutting off his fingers and later decapitating him.
