While California Democrats pushed for a waiver on Obamacare health insurance for illegal immigrants, most voters oppose the idea, according to a Rasmussen Reports survey.

A majority of 59 percent likely U.S. voters do not favor allowing illegal immigrants in their state to purchase health insurance through an Obamacare exchange.

The results:

  • In favor: 29 percent.
  • Not in favor: 59 percent.
  • Undecided: 12 percent.

According to a 2009 survey, 80 percent of voters opposed the government healthcare coverage for illegal immigrants. Democrats supported allowing illegal immigrants to buy health insurance in their state through one of the new exchanges by a 48-39 percent count. Meanwhile, 83 percent of Republicans and 60 percent of unaffiliated voters opposed the proposal.

Most voters still oppose Obamacare's requirement that every American should buy or obtain health insurance. The respondents cited reasons such as financial losses and major health insurers announcing plans to back out of the state exchanges, leaving them with fewer options and higher rates.

Other results show:

  • Fifty-nine percent of voters believe the policies of the federal government encourage illegal immigration of which 80 percent oppose allowing illegal immigrants to buy health insurance through a healthcare exchange.
  • Sixty-five percent of those who don't believe the federal government encourages illegal immigration favor making health insurance available to them.
  • Sixty-four percent of voters strongly approve of President Barack Obama allowing illegal immigrants to buy health insurance through an Obamacare exchange.
  • Among voters who strongly disapprove of the president's plan, 89 percent oppose following California's example in their state.

While most Americans believe their personal health hasn't changed much over the past five years, most also say they're paying more for healthcare than they were five years ago.

The poll, which was conducted via national telephone and online survey on September 18-19, had 1,000 participants. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points.
