A New York man was arrested Wednesday over charges that he planned to blow himself up with a homemade bomb around Election Day in Washington, D.C.

According to NBC New York, police and FBI agents showed up at the home of Paul Rosenfeld in Orangetown, New York Wednesday morning with a search warrant. According to the news station, Rosenfeld had earlier told a reporter in Pennsylvania about his plans — which were rooted in his negative feelings about where the country is headed.

Police said Rosenfeld planned to kill himself but did not intend to hurt anyone else.

The divisive political atmosphere hanging over the nation's capital has led to threats against politicians and members of their families in recent months. Several Democrats have called for the general public to confront and harass Republicans in public settings, which has resulted in shouting matches across the nation.

In June 2017, a gunman fired at several Republican lawmakers on an Alexandria, Virginia baseball field. Police shot and killed the gunman. Four people were wounded, including Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., who nearly died.
