Homeland Security Warns Over Venezuelan Air Travel

By    |   Tuesday, 09 September 2008 11:54 AM

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has released a warning over Venezuelan airport security after officials were blocked from inspecting international airports there.

The unusual move will not immediately block flights to the United States, The Wall Street Journal reports, but could heighten tensions over already skittish air travel between the countries.

The imbroglio arose after DHS officials were blocked from inspecting Venezuela international airports to determine if they comply with security standards adopted by the International Civil Aviation Organization, according to the DHS travel warning letter.

The Journal cited a source at the U.S. Embassy who stated that U.S. inspectors have been trying to access Venezuela's main international hubs, including Simon Bolivar International Airport, for the last two years.

The warning will be posted “in all U.S. airports regularly being served by scheduled air carrier operations,” according to the notice.

The Transportation Security Administration (under DHS) officials are responsible for determining full compliance with ICAO standards.
