BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Lawyers for an anti-gay marriage group have appeared before judges in Rhode Island and New York seeking the right to run political ads without having to comply with certain donor and spending reporting requirements.
The Washington, D.C.-based National Organization for Marriage is a major financial backer of campaigns opposing same-sex marriage. It has filed suits in several states arguing it shouldn't be labeled a political committee because it's not controlled by candidates.
A judge in Buffalo, where NOM supports Republican gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino, didn't immediately rule after hearing legal arguments. In Providence, a judge said the group could go ahead with ads there as long as it reports how much it's spending.
