The U.S. military is closing in on a partial missile shield over southern Europe -- an integral part of defenses against looming Iranian missiles, reports the Washington Post.
Department of Defensive officials disclose that they are on the cusp of an understanding to establish a key early-warning radar ground station, probably in Turkey or Bulgaria. Installation of the radar would enable the first phase of the shield, targeted to become operational next year.
Meanwhile, reports the Post, the U.S. military is cooperating with Israel and other allies in the Persian Gulf region to ramp up their missile defense capabilities.
Already up and running is Israeli radar, which is being mannedby U.S. personnel -- feeding data to U.S. Navy ships in the Mediteranean.
The initiatives are aimed at Iran, which may one day be armed with a nuclear warheads aimed at targets in the Middle East and Europe, including U.S. forces stationed there.
