Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg was loudly booed by University of Michigan graduates for blasting "safe spaces" designed to protect easily offended students from "uncomfortable" points of view.
At his commencement speech last Saturday, the billionaire businessman declared "the whole purpose of college is to learn how to deal with difficult situations — not run away from them,"
Yahoo News reports.
"One of the most dangerous places on a college campus is a safe space because it creates the false impression that we can insulate ourselves from those who hold different views."
"We can’t do this, and we shouldn’t try — not in politics or in the workplace," he added, Yahoo News reports. "In the global economy, and in a democratic society, an open mind is the most valuable asset you can possess."
Yahoo News points out a center for gay, bisexual and transgender university students at the university created a safe space ahead of a debate titled "Does Feminism Have a Free Speech Problem?" which the center said included speakers whose "rhetoric … is incredibly harmful to many members of our campus community."
