MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Police say they won't force hundreds of pro-union demonstrators to leave the Wisconsin Capitol and will allow them to stay overnight.
Wisconsin Capitol Police Chief Charles Tubbs says no demonstrators will be arrested as long as they continue to obey the law.
Police had earlier asked all protesters to leave by 4 p.m. so the Capitol could get its first thorough cleaning in two weeks.
Protesters began camping out inside the normally immaculate building two weeks ago in an effort to fight legislation proposed by Wisconsin's new Republican governor that would strip most public employees of the right to collectively bargain.
