U.N. Chief Bemoans Worsening Darfur Conditions

By    |   Tuesday, 07 October 2008 12:19 PM EDT

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon expressed concern about the worsening situation in the Darfur region of Sudan.

"Conditions in Darfur are deteriorating," Ban told reporters Tuesday. “I am worried about it.

Attacks on U.N. peacekeeping forces there are increasing, he said.

The U.N. and the African Union together have almost 20,000 soldiers in the embattled African region.

Relief operations in Darfur have been the source of friction between the U.N. and the Sudanese government.

A controversial no-bid contract by Lockheed-Martin to provide logistical facilities to U.N. personnel has been the subject of several U.N. auditors’ investigations.
