Oliver North: Russia Likely to Annex Crimea

By    |   Tuesday, 04 March 2014 06:13 AM EST

Russia is likely to annex Crimea, the strategic peninsula that is part of Ukraine, says former Lt. Col. Oliver North, and he wonders how much more of the country President Vladimir Putin has his eyes on.

"It's going to get a whole lot worse before it gets any better," North said Monday on Fox News Channel's "Hannity."

"Everybody knows there are no 'red lines' for this administration," North added, saying that President Barack Obama "draws with a pink crayon."

North was referring to Obama's "red line" statement in which he warned Syria against using chemical weapons in its civil war. When it was determined that Syria had used chemical weapons, Obama waffled on whether to follow his words with military action. He lacked support at home and among allies.

It was Putin who ended up rescuing Obama when Secretary of State John Kerry offhandedly said Syria could end the crisis by giving up its weapons. Putin's government agreed to oversee just such a deal.

Kerry is set to visit Kiev, Ukraine's capital, on Tuesday, in a show of support for the government that recently ousted its pro-Russian president, Viktor Yanukovych.

North said he wouldn't be surprised to see Putin use Kerry's visit as an excuse for air strikes on Ukrainian airbases.
