Amid the calls for potential sanctions against Saudi Arabia for their alleged involvement in the disappearance – and suspected murder – of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, President Donald Trump tweeted a reminder he has no Saudi hotels or golf courses.
"For the record, I have no financial interests in Saudi Arabia (or Russia, for that matter)," President Trump tweeted. "Any suggestion that I have is just more FAKE NEWS (of which there is plenty)!"
President Trump's tweet was in response to reports he might be conflicted in his handling of the allegations against Saudi Arabia, as outlets like CNN recalled campaign rally comments about having sold U.S. property to Saudis in the past.
"I get along great with all of them," Trump told a 2015 Mobile, Alabama, campaign rally, as CNN reported Tuesday. "They buy apartments from me. They spend $40 million, $50 million. Am I supposed to dislike them? I like them very much!"
Last week, The Washington Post reported on the comment and the Saudis who have stayed at Trump Organization hotels under the story headlined: "Trump has long-standing business ties with Saudis, who have boosted his hotels since he took office."
The Post reported on a Thursday statement from the Trump Organization: "Like many global real estate companies, we have explored opportunities in many markets, that said, we do not have any plans for expansion into Saudi Arabia."
