President Donald Trump has sent out a tweet that he was donating $100,000 of his salary to the Department of Homeland Security.
“While the press doesn’t like writing about it, nor do I need them to, I donate my yearly Presidential salary of $400,000.00 to different agencies throughout the year, this to Homeland Security,” Trump wrote. “If I didn’t do it there would be hell to pay from the FAKE NEWS MEDIA!”
The president has previously donated quarters of his annual salary to different government agencies, according to The Hill.
Trump gave $100,000 in January to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, a subsidiary of the National Institutes of Health. He gave the same amount to the Small Business Administration in October.
According to CNN, federal regulations ban agencies from accepting donated funds unless Congress grants it authority to accept the money.
If there is no congressional authorization, donated money is placed in the Department of Treasury’s general fund.
