President Donald Trump sent out a tweet on Sunday defending his desire to construct a wall along the border with Mexico by referring to reports about a privacy wall former President Barack Obama has built around his Washington, D.C., home.

"President and Mrs. Obama built/has a ten foot Wall around their D.C. mansion/compound," Trump wrote in the tweet. "I agree, totally necessary for their safety and security. The U.S. needs the same thing, slightly larger version!"

TMZ reported that the Obamas had obtained permits for additional security at their home and put up a brick wall, which was completed in 2017.

Trump’s demand for $5 billion in wall funding for the southern border is the focus of the current budget impasse that led to the partial government shutdown, according to The Hill.

Democrats have refused to offer more than $1.3 billion for overall border security measures, citing among the reasons that Trump had pledged repeatedly that Mexico would pay for a wall built on the border.
