Donald Trump said in an interview Saturday that his views on gay rights are still “evolving” but that he is still a strong supporter of traditional marriage between a man and a woman.
“I think I’m evolving, and I think I’m a very fair person, but I have been for traditional marriage," the billionaire businessman told MSNBC anchor Thomas Roberts in an interview reported
on the eve of Saturday night's broadcast of the Miss Universe pageant from Moscow.
Roberts, who is co-hosting the pageant, is openly gay.
"I am for traditional marriage," Trump said. "I am for a marriage between a man and a woman."
Trump, the co-owner of the Miss Universe Organization, also disclosed that he would build a skyscraper in Moscow similar to his Trump Tower in New York City,
the Russian Times reports.
He endorsed the selection of Moscow as this year's host city by pageant organizers, MSNBC reports.
Gay-rights supporters have called for boycotts of Russia since the nation enacted its tough anti-gay laws, which call for such individuals to be arrested.
"We have a lot of gay people who work at the Miss Universe pageant, and we said, 'What do you think?' And they said: 'We want to go. We want to show our stuff,'' Trump said.
When asked generally about the issue of same-sex marriage, Trump said: “I think really what you have is a very changing stance, and you see if changing very rapidly. If you go back 10 years ago, it’s very different."
