The Transportation Security Administration predicts that it will screen more than 28 million people, including passengers and crewmembers, during the Fourth of July holiday, a time frame from June 29 to July 9, The Hill reported.
"What we’ve seen already this summer are significant passenger increases," said TSA administrator David Pekoske in an interview with The Hill.
He said the number of passengers is up by 4 percent “but some airports are up higher than that and some are a little lower than that.”
The TSA works with airlines that operating in a given airport and the airport itself to determine the likely number of passengers, as well as the times they are expected to move through the airport, the report said.
Pekoske said he hopes to implement new technology to speed up screening at airports, such as automated screening lanes and new X-ray machines, The Hill reported.
On June 20, TSA announced that it would add powders to the list of items in passengers’ carry-on bags that it will scrutinize.
