Almost $8 million has been spent by the Pentagon to treat more than 1,500 transgender troops since 2016, USA Today is reporting.

In all, 1,525 service members have been diagnosed with gender dysphoria since 2016, according to the newspaper.

Here is how the number breaks down by service.

  • 500 on active duty in the Army and another 64 in the Guard or Reserve
  • 442 in the Navy and another 9 in the Guard or Reserve
  • 354 in the Air Force and 14 more in the Guard or Reserve
  • 101 in the Marine Corps and 2 in the Guard or Reserve
  • 33 in the Coast Guard and 1 in the Guard or Reserve
  • 4 in the Public Health Service

President Donald Trump has moved to ban transgender troops. The Supreme Court ruled in January that a modified ban could take effect as lower court move ahead. Meanwhile, the House Armed Services Committee will hear testimony Wednesday on the ban, which blocks most troops with a diagnosis of gender dysphoria.

As of Feb. 1, the cost for treating those with gender dysphoria has totaled $7,943,906, USA Today said.  Psychotherapy sessions cost nearly $5.8 million and surgery cost more than $2 million, according to the newspaper, which attributed in the figures to the Pentagon.
