Republican support for transgender people serving in the military has increased significantly over the last two years, even as President Donald Trump has banned them from being in the armed forces, according to a Public Religion Research Institute survey released on Tuesday.
Forty-seven percent of Republicans now support transgender military service, compared with only 37 percent who backed it in 2017.
Other results from the poll showed:
- Support among Democrats for transgender military service has fallen to 78 percent, compared to 83 percent two years ago.
- Independents have remained steady in their opinions, with 66 in favor of transgender military service, compared with 67 percent in 2017.
- Among all Americans, backing for transgender military service is at 63 percent, compared with 64 percent two years ago.
Trump chose to make this an issue when he first tweeted about it in July 2017, as it was not a subject that was on the national agenda, according to The Washington Post.
The ban came into effect two months ago.
The poll was conducted between April 9-20 among a random sample of 1,100 adults who are 18 years of age or older living in the United States. The margin of error for the survey is +/- 3.5 percentage points at the 95 percent level of confidence.
