Shootings Show French Failure to Deal With Radical Islam

France appears to have badly mishandled the case of Mohamed Merah, the Algerian who gunned down three children and a rabbi in Toulouse last week.

Not only was Merah not detained after threatening to kill a French family in 2010 after they objected to his attempt to force their son to watch videos of beheadings, but he was allowed to amass a collection of heavy firearms, including automatic weapons.

This tragedy should awaken France to the dangers of radical Islam and a serve as validation of U.S. policies to arrest and detain radical Islamists — policies that have been heavily criticized in Europe.
