Conservatives Cheer 'Top Gun: Maverick' Best Picture Oscar Nom

The six Oscar nominations garnered by “Top Gun: Maverick” on Tuesday, including best picture, have delighted many conservatives on social media because of the film's pro-American theme.

Movie fans flocked in large numbers last year to watch the long-awaited sequel to Tom Cruise’s 1986 blockbuster hit. The film, rife with old-fashioned movie values, grossed $718,732,821 in U.S. box-office receipts, according to BoxOfficeMojo.com, more than any other film in 2022, and $770 million internationally.

The film earned Oscar nominations for best picture, film editing, adapted screenplay, visual effects, original song (“Hold My Hand,” written and sung by Lady Gaga) and sound.

“The Good News: Top Gun Maverick was nominated for Best Picture by the Oscars,” conservative commentator C.J. Pearson tweeted Tuesday. “The Bad News: Hollywood hates America so Top Gun Maverick will more than likely not be taking that award home.”

Immigration lawyer Matthew Kolken tweeted: “The only Hollywood movie I've seen since 2019 is ‘Top Gun: Maverick.’ It was about the only movie that could get me to go to a theater again and support an industry that abhors constitutional protections, and this specifically and ironically includes freedom of speech. #Oscars2023."

Even the Twitter account New York Times Arts weighed in with a tweet: “‘Top Gun: Maverick’ has been nominated for best picture at the 2023 Oscars. The movie ‘has nothing to say about geopolitics and everything to do with the defense of old-fashioned movie values in the face of streaming-era nihilism,’ our critic writes.”

“Top Gun: Maverick” is one of 10 films nominated for best picture, including “Avatar: The Way of Water,” All Quiet on the Western Front,” “The Banshees of Inisherin,” “Elvis” and "Everything Everywhere All at Once."

Even though he wasn’t nominated in an acting category, Cruise has a chance to win his first Oscar statue if “Top Gun: Maverick” wins best picture because he was a producer.

The Academy Awards are scheduled for 8 p.m. March 12 at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles and will be broadcast on ABC, with liberal late-night TV host Jimmie Kimmel set to host.
