Sen. Cotton: Biden Is 'Lost, Confused' on China-Taiwan Policy

(Independent)

Speaking about an appearance President Joe Biden gave at a U.N. event where he appeared to amble about aimlessly on stage, Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., said in response that Biden's position toward China is "lost and confused."

"I think the president's position toward China remains lost and confused," Cotton told Fox News host Maria Bartiromo.

Citing the "60 Minutes" interview the president gave last week, Cotton said, "He yet again said the 'United States would come to Taiwan's aid militarily' if Chinese communists go for the jugular of that free island.

"Yet again," Cotton continued, "for the fourth time in just 13 months, an anonymous White House aide rushed to walk back that statement, which is the worst of both worlds.

"The president provokes the Chinese communists without deterring them. And I think that's been consistent in his approach to China and Russia for the first two years of his administration.

"Throughout 2021, he projected weakness, which enticed [Russian President] Vladimir Putin to invade Ukraine. And he's projected weakness toward China as well, making the western Pacific much more dangerous."

While Cotton said Biden "stumbled" onto the right policy when it comes to coming to Taiwan's defense, he said that Biden instead "dusted himself off and moved right along as if it never happened."
