Billionaire liberals Tom Steyer and George Soros have sunk another $650,000 into the gubernatorial campaign of Andrew Gillum ahead of Florida's Democratic primary next week, Politico reports.
The latest cash infusion comes on top of $1.5 million the pair ($1 million from Steyer) previously donated to Gillum, the only black Democratic candidate and the one that the left-wing donors see as the most progressive.
"He’s a really unusual candidate," Steyer told Politico of Gillum. "You can see we don’t often get involved in D-on-D so it must be because we have such high regard for him, for the ideas he represents and what he can do for Florida."
Gillum, mayor of Tallahassee, is facing an uphill battle in a crowded Democratic field due to three main reasons:
- Lack of name recognition
- An FBI investigation that has ensnared him despite not being a target
- Lack of funds
Soros and Steyer are helping out with No. 3.
"We endorsed the most progressive candidate," Steyer told Politico. "We found a candidate who represents a very progressive outlook."
Gwen Graham has a nearly 8-point lead in the race for the Democratic governor nod, according to the RealClearPolitics average of all the Florida surveys.
Gillum also is duking it out with former Miami mayor Philip Levine and billionaire businessman Jeff Greene.
Florida's Democratic primary is Tuesday.
