Australian Billionaire to Build, Launch Titanic II

Monday, 30 April 2012 09:32 AM EDT

Australian billionaire Clive Palmer, who made his fortune in mining, has commissioned a Chinese company to a build a replica of the Titanic that would be ready to set sail in 2016, the BBC reported.

The new version of the ill-fated ship that sank on its maiden voyage 100 years ago will be equipped with modern technology but be as close as possible in design and specifications to the original.

"It will be every bit as luxurious as the original Titanic but, of course, it will have state-of-the-art 21st-century technology and the latest navigation and safety systems," Palmer said, according to the BBC.

The original Titanic, touted as unsinkable, went down on April 15, 1912, after hitting an iceberg in a disaster that took the lives of some 1,500 people. Palmer said the new version is “designed so it won’t sink.”

"Of course it will sink if you put a hole in it,'' Palmer said, in response to questions.
