Time Reporter Tweet: 'Can't Wait' for Drone Hit on WikiLeaks' Assange

By    |   Monday, 19 August 2013 09:31 AM EDT

Time Magazine's senior correspondent said he "can't wait" for WikiLeaks' Julian Assange to be assassinated in a drone strike.

"I can't wait to write a defense of the drone strike that takes out Julian Assange," Michael Grunwald tweeted Sunday.

He later deleted the comment, admitting it was "dumb," but a number of Twitter users captured it by screenshot and re-tweeted it, according to Mediaite.

Grunwald also agreed with another Twitter user that he deleted it only because "it [gave] Assange supporters a nice safe persecution complex to hide in," The Washington Times reported.

In response, a Time spokesperson wrote, "Michael Grunwald posted an offensive tweet from his personal Twitter account that is in no way representative of Time's views. He regrets having tweeted it, and he removed it from his feed," Mediaite reported.

WikiLeaks also responded: "We have written to Time magazine to ask for Michael Grunwald's resignation. Time must show that journalists calling for the murder of other journalists, or indeed, anybody, is never acceptable," according to the Washington Times.

Assange has been holed up in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London for 14 months. He has been granted asylum by Ecuador but has been unable to leave the UK for fear that he would be extradited to Sweden, where he faces charges for sexual assault.
