There is no question that the government shutdown is a "Nancy Pelosi" problem, and it will have to be solved by Democrats, Sen. Tim Scott, a member of the Finance and Armed Services committees said Monday.
"There is no question that her speakership seems to be in balance against border security," the South Carolina Republican told Fox News' "Outnumbered Overtime." "[When] Democrats were negotiating DACA, they were able to provide $25 billion for a wall. Under President [Barack] Obama they allowed for about $8 billion for border security. So now President [Donald] Trump is president and the speakership is on the line, we are talking about $1.3 billion and the continued resolution."
However, Pelosi wrote in a letter to colleagues on Saturday that until Trump can publicly commit to a bipartisan resolution, there will be no agreement before January, and that comment has left the matter at a standstill because Pelosi's election for speaker is "imperiled," said Scott.
"We will have to wait until after the election," said Scott. "That does not make a lot of sense for the average American and it does not make sense on the border. If we are going to move this game forward, we are going to have to do so by focusing on what is in the best interest of the average person in this country and that is to have secure borders."
That means Democrats will have to come back to the table and take a proposal seriously, whether or not they like Trump, said Scott.
