Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., has prostate cancer and will undergo surgery next week to treat it, he announced Monday.

In a statement, Tillis said he "had no symptoms and would have never imagined I had cancer. My prognosis is good because I went to my annual physical and received a PSA test, which led to a biopsy and eventually my diagnosis. Early detection can truly save lives."

"I am blessed that my cancer was detected relatively early, and I can’t emphasize enough how important routine screenings are, regardless of how healthy you think you are," he said.

"Next week, I will have surgery in North Carolina," he said. ""I am in the hands of outstanding medical professionals and expect to make a full recovery."

Tillis, 60, just began serving his second six-year term in the Senate.

The Senator traveled to the U.S.-Mexico border last week with a group of Republican senators. He reported that he visited the Donna U.S. Customs and Border Protection facility in Texas used for housing and processing illegal immigrants.

"Currently, the facility has far surpassed maximum holding capacity and roughly 10 percent of facility occupants have tested positive for COVID-19, as reported by the CBP.," he said in a statement about the visit.

The full Senate will not convene again until mid-April, and it’s unclear if Tillis will miss any votes in the Senate, where each major party holds 50 seats, CNBC noted. Before winning election to the Senate in 2014, Tillis served as speaker in the North Carolina state House.
