Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe is "seriously considering" a run for president in 2020, The Hill reported.

Citing friends close to McAuliffe, the man who served as campaign co-chairman to Bill Clinton's reelection campaign in 1996 and Hillary Clinton's 2008 campaign chair is mulling a run as the frontman for a party with no obvious favorite in 2020.

"I don't think he's 100 percent decided that this is something he's planning to do, but it is something he's seriously considering," one McAuliffe friend told The Hill.

McAuliffe addressed the rumors earlier this month, saying, "let's talk after I get out of here" — Jan. 13, the day his term ends as governor — about his 2020 presidential intentions.

McAuliffe's biggest handicap might be his ties to the Clintons, who some view as a tarnished and tired brand in politics.

"I don't think he is the way to go for the Democrats," Julian Zelizer, a professor of history and public affairs at Princeton University, told The Hill. "There is too much Clinton in him, and he doesn't have the kind of fire power on the campaign trail people will need to really rally the base."
