Situation Report: Syria Cease-fire in Trouble

The fragile cease-fire in Syria appears to be fraying in the face of huge anti-regime protests today and the perception that the government is refusing to fully cooperating in the peace attempt. The Syrian Army has not withdrawn from cities and towns, as President Bashar Assad had promised when he signed on to the Kofi Annan-negotiated peace agreement last week. Some protesters have reportedly been killed by Syrian forces in the last 24 hours. The UN has refused to say that Syria has broken the agreement, instead pressing for the Assad regime to abide by all components of it. But it does not appear that a real peace has been reached in Syria, which spells trouble in the coming weeks.
