Survey: Almost 80 Percent of Users Would Not Pay for Facebook

Almost 80 percent of Facebook users would not pay $1 a month to use the social media network, market research firm Alpha reported from a recent survey.

Among the survey of 1,163 Facebook users:

• 79 percent said they would not be willing to pay $1 a month to use the service with no ads.
• 21 percent said they would be willing to pay $1 a month.

Other survey results showed that most Facebook users would leave the service if it began to charge for certain features.

• 84 percent said they would leave Facebook if it charged for one-on-one messaging; 16 percent would pay for that service.
• 87 percent would leave if Facebook charged for allowing users to see and register for events; 13 percent would pay.
• 84 percent would leave if Facebook charged for allowing users to see and register for groups.
• 26 percent said they are concerned at a level of "5," out of 5, or "extremely concerned," about their privacy on social media.
• 28 percent said their concern is a "4."
• 31 percent said their concern is a "3."
• 43 percent said they trust Facebook to keep their data secure at a level of "3" out of 5.
• 19 percent rated Facebook's effort a "2."
• 12 percent rated the effort a "1."

Facebook has been conducting market research to determine if an ad-free version would push more people to join, Bloomberg reported on Friday.
