Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, one of the most revered contemporary conservative jurists, turned 74 on Thursday, the same day his majority opinion in a landmark Second Amendment case was released – a fitting honor for a man at the height of his profession and his powers.

But he arrived at his perch after a life forged and shaped by adversity.
