Gingrich Ad Rips Romney for Mass. Roots, Speaking French

By    |   Friday, 13 January 2012 12:47 PM

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich isn’t letting up in his heated attack against front-runner Mitt Romney. The former House speaker’s campaign today released an Internet video ad that compares the former Massachusetts governor to two failed Democratic presidential candidates from the Bay State. The ad also lambastes Romney for speaking French.

Romney is associated with Democrats Sen. John Kerry, who lost to President George W. Bush in 2004, and former Gov. Michael Dukakis, who lost to President George H.W. Bush in 1988.

"What has Massachusetts given us?” asks the ad’s narrator. “A liberal governor who wanted us to believe he was strong on defense, a liberal senator who wanted us to believe he was a man of the people, and a Massachusetts moderate who runs away from Ronald Reagan."

The ad then shows a clip from a debate in Romney’s 1994 Senate race against Massachusetts Democrat Edward Kennedy. “Look, I was an Independent at the time of Reagan-Bush,” Romney said in the debate. “I’m not trying to return to Reagan-Bush.”

The ad continues to hit the front-runner for his moderate views. "Romney donated to Democrats, and given the choice to vote in the Democrat or Republican primary, Romney chose the Democrats, voting for a liberal Democrat instead of President George H. W. Bush," the narrator says.

"Romney opposed the Contract with America, raised taxes, and authored government-mandated healthcare with taxpayer-funded abortions. But now he tells us: Trust me, I’m a conservative. Massachusetts moderate Mitt Romney, he’ll say anything to win."

Then comes the French connection. "Just like John Kerry, he speaks French, too," the ad intones. “Bonjour, je m’appelle Mitt Romney [Hello, my name is Mitt Romney],” Romney says in a clip related to the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. Romney helped organize the Games, for which French is the official language.

Bottom line: “He’s still a Massachusetts moderate, and a Massachusetts moderate can’t beat Barack Obama,” the narrator says.
