Quinnipiac: Ohio Still Dead Heat, Romney Has Momentum

Monday, 05 March 2012 10:17 AM EST

Similar to his late surges in other states, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney has turned the tables on former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum in the Ohio Republican presidential primary, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

Although 34 percent of likely Republican primary voters preferred Romney and 31 percent were for Santorum, the poll, conducted by telephone March 2-4, showed the race was too close to call. In a previous Quinnipiac poll, conducted Feb. 27, Santorum had led, 36 percent to 29 percent.

Quinnipiac surveyed 753 likely Republican primary voters in Ohio with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.6 percentage points.

“Just as he did in Florida and Michigan, Romney has erased a sizable deficit a week before the primary to grab the momentum in the final 24 hours,” said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. The three-point margin between the candidates makes the Ohio race too close to call, Brown said.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich of Georgia ranked third in the poll with 15 percent. U.S. Rep. Ron Paul of Texas reaped 12 percent.

Ohio’s primary — and elections in nine other states — will be conducted tomorrow on Super Tuesday. Ohio’s 66 delegates at stake rank second to Georgia’s 76 delegates. Other states with primaries tomorrow are Alaska, Idaho, Massachusetts, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Vermont, and Virginia.
